12 days to a glowing Christmas skin...

Here goes the finale of my 12 days to a glowing Christmas skin...

On the ninth day of Christmas…Perform a facial massage at least once a day.
I give my clients some basic self facial massage movements to do when applying their moisturiser.
Even just using upward and outward circular moves can detoxify, brighten and tone the facial muscles.

On the tenth day of Christmas…Sleep! I know this is a tricky one but try and get as much quality sleep as you can especially if you know you have a heavy week on the way.
Studies have shown that sleep loss is linked to increasing the ageing process.

On the eleventh day of Christmas…However tired or merry you may be, do not commit the cardinal sin of going to bed in your makeup!
Sleeping in a cocktail of oils, dyes, chemicals and preservatives whilst your skin is trying to repair will leave you with dry, spotty, grey skin in the morning.

On the twelfth day of Christmas…You’ve made it! And is you’ve been following these golden rules you should be looking radiant.
If however you are not here’s hoping that you have a U and your skin gift card in your stocking www.uandyourskin.co.uk
Merry Christmas and a ‘glowing’ 2011!

12 days to a glowing Christmas skin...

So far you should have booked in for your facial with me, upped your water intake, started to nurture your Liver (& then ultimately your skin) with Milk Thistle tincture & purchased your MD Formulations cleanser to rejuvenate your skin daily.
Panic not! There is still time to get on board with the above & to continue your quest to glowing Christmas skin come December the 25th by following days 5 to 8.

On the fifth day of Christmas… Shoe horn just 10-15 minutes of Yoga into your day. www.yogajournal.com has some fab, short yoga videos you can watch for free. Yoga is amazing for distressing and for bringing fresh blood and nutrients to the skin…I could go on.

On the sixth day of Christmas…Not using an eye product yet? Now is as good a time as any...look for one with Peptides. This ingredient will pack a punch as far as firming, toning & brightening the delicate eye area, giving you party ready peepers.

On the seventh day of Christmas… Make the most of Vitamin C rich Cranberries by scattering them onto your muesli or porridge. These berries are packed with the anti ageing benefits of antioxidants and will boost your collagen levels and immune system.

On the eighth day of Christmas…Now unless your tee total your undoubtedly going to partake in a glass or two of alcohol. So, if you must opt for red wine since this is rich in polyphenols another powerful antioxidant which defends the skin cells and is good for your heart. (In moderation)

12 days to glowing Christmas skin…

It’s that time of year again where I start giving my clients the Christmas countdown to the party season.
Like most things to do with the festive season, getting prepared for the influx of party invites, carol concerts and school plays, frenzied shopping and subsequent late nights, takes some planning.

I’m guessing this is your countdown so far; buy and write Christmas cards (realising that you’ve missed the international post deadline) check! Make Christmas pudding and cake (good intention, never happens) check! Purchase Christmas gifts (during a rugby scrum style shopping experience) check! Attend 101 parties, drinks and concerts (whose party is this one?) check! Relax with friends and family on Christmas Eve (fall in a heap after your 3rd glass of bubbly realising that you haven’t had time for that leg wax, manicure & gasp! Facial) check!
Or maybe that’s just how my countdown goes, with a few clients to treat thrown in.

So how do we ensure that instead of looking grey, tired, puffy and blood shot, that we enter a room radiating health, calm and looking, well, fantastic!?
Well here's the start of your 12days to glowing Christmas skin:

On the first day of Christmas… Book and have a professional skin treatment. This is a very busy time for me since I recommend my clients to have a pre party season facial. As ever it will be totally bespoke to tackle the needs of the client whether it’s a total rescue treatment or something to just maintain radiant skin for the season.

On the second day of Christmas… Water!! Yup it’s a must with all the extra intake of alcohol and centrally heated environments. Aim to up your intake to at least 1 ½ litres a day if you want to avoid puffy, parched skin.

On the third day of Christmas…Start to take a tincture of Milk thistle and artichoke. This is great Liver support and can help with those rich foods and drink indulgences. The Liver, if not able to function properly, will ultimately cause the skin to eliminate toxins, so start taking it daily now.

On the fourth day of Christmas…Start your way to a brighter skin by using a daily gentle exfoiliator. I recommend the MD Formulations facial cleanser (£25 www.uandyourskin.co.uk) rich in fruit acids to encourage cell regeneration without the need for harsh abrasives.

To be continued....

Skin Soothers...

One of my approaches to treating the skin is a holistic one. I believe that the skin is a window allowing us to get an insight into systemic problems that may need to be addressed.

Whether it be digestive troubles, stress, poor diet, medication or a period of ill health, our skin is usually one of the first places to shout.
This could be in the form of spotty outbreaks, redness, dryness or a sudden 'sensitivity' to products that we may be using.

That's why I wanted to share with you this article I read courtesy of 'Yoga Journal' which is one of my favourite websites.
I love how this talks about the ancient Ayurvedic therapies & it gives some great remedies for combating skin dryness from the inside out, one of my other firm beliefs.

It explains the principles of Ayurveda & at this time of year helps to work towards calming & nurturing the body & ultimately the skin.
Check out the article & I would love to know your thoughts & experiences with the philosophy...http://www.yogajournal.com/health/2549?utm_source=MyYogaJournal&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=MyYogaJournal

Men’s skincare…just buy your own…!!

Men’s skincare…just buy your own…

Over 14 years ago before my now husband was my husband and we were both at college, he asked me a year into my Beauty therapy training, if I could ‘sort his skin out’. Was this a subtle way of him asking me out for a half pint of Fosters and a bag of crisps? No he really did want me to sort his skin out.

So even at this early stage of my career I guess he had the belief in my knowledge of the skin enough to want me to give him some advice. After a brief conversation about shaving habits and product use I introduced him to a couple of male skin care tips and low and behold, was astounded, when less than a week later his skin was, well, normal again. He was delighted and seven years later we were married.

Now I didn’t just tell you all that to reveal my romantic history I want to talk men and male grooming and write this blog for all the men out there who are dabbling in the men’s’ skincare market….come on you know who you are.

Despite the fact that we are seeing and reading more and more about this side of the market and that the likes of David Beckham and Pierce Brosnan are promoting skin care products for men, men still only spent £57 million last year on skincare products.

You may think that’s a lot of money but its nothing compared with the whopping £602 million that women spend, which means that your average man spends a mere £2.50 a year.

I only have to look at my loyal clientele to see that still the majority of them are women, although, that said this is starting to change and, to my delight, I am seeing more men who are genuinely concerned with the health of their skin than before.

I still think there is a big gap in the market with male ‘A’ doing absolutely nothing to his skin apart from maybe run a razor across his poor weathered complexion to male ‘B’ moisturising daily, exfoliating weekly and coming for a professional facial treatment monthly.

Rather sickeningly men do tend to age a lot better than women (mainly due to the difference in our hormones) however that doesn’t mean to say that they can scrub at their face like it’s a pair of mud covered football boots, or blast it with hot water in the shower, no men’s skin also needs some TLC just in a manly kind of a way.

So just for all you men out there here’s some basic skin stuff that will keep your skin in top condition….I ask one thing though…buy your own.
• Wash your face morning and night with a product that contains a fruit acid. My husband loves the MD Formulations cleanser (www.uandyourskin.co.uk) £25.00, which will gently lift away dead cells daily and prevent in growing hairs.
• Use an environmental shield, to hydrate and protect your skin. One with a SPF of at least 15 would be a good starting point.
• Opt for a shaving cream or oil, since gels and foams will up set the balance of the skin causing shaving rash and dryness.
• Have a regular facial treatment. I recommend my male clients to see me every 4-8 weeks for a deep cleanse and skin health reassessment.

Mineral Make up...It's not just a pretty face.

Now just in case you didn't realise it, my passion (apart from a Grande Spearmint Green Tea from Starbucks or sometimes it's a London fog) is skin!

Over the last 14 years I have been lucky to have a diverse career in the beauty industry and a big chunk of it was spent as an Account development manager & trainer for the skincare range that I still use & recommend, MD Formulations.

It was whilst working in this role, about 8 years ago, that during one of our team meetings we were told that we were to become the UK distributor of a mineral make up range, Bare Escentuals.

I can still remember sitting in that meeting & thinking 'Make up!! I hate make up! I can't sell to or teach therapists make up!!', but let me tell you I have never looked back when it comes to using & applying this range.

I am fortunate to have been taught the truly amazing benefits of this 100% pure mineral range by Leslie Blodgett, the lady who developed this 'cult' range in San Francisco back in the '70's.

I was so inspired by her & she used me to demonstrate the abilities of this range to heal, conceal & protect the skin.
It makes complete sense to me as a skin therapist, to be able to use a product & retail it to my client's knowing that it is actually good for the skin & won't undo all the hard work carried out in a facial treatment.

I would love to show you all what this make up can do for you & pass on my expertise & knowledge in this range & I pride myself on being a true Bare Escentuals veteran.

Let me show you how to 'Swirl,Tap & Buff' with Bare Escentuals. Book a 30 minute tutorial with me & I'll give you 15% off any Bare Escentuals retail you purchase.
(tutorial £15 without product purchase)

The latest innovations in skin technology...

I'm such a sponge when it comes to learning anything new about the skin. I guess it's so much easier to absorb and use information when you truly love the subject.
Maths, on the other hand, was a whole different ball game. I was the one that would glaze over at the first hint of the word multiplication and was so uninspired by these mundane lessons.

On Monday I once again visited The International Dermal Institute to attend two skin related courses and the scene in that classroom couldn't have been more different.
If I could have shot my hand up any quicker when a question was asked I would have ripped my arm out of it's socket and I was tempted on a couple of occasions to use my pen just so my hand would be the highest out of the others that were raised....yep I am indeed a swot.

I found the day reassuring as I realised that I did actually know what I was talking about! I also took on board a wealth of new & exciting knowledge, the cutting edge in all that is skin and cant wait to put it into practice on my clients existing and new.

The morning was all about 'Discovering skin disorders' a recap for me on the sometimes weird and wonderful things that we can have appear on the skin. It's great to get updated information on these and be able to recognise them so as to decide if I can help these problems or refer to somebody that can.
There was a bit of squirming going on as we all looked at the photos that accompanied some of the more serious issues.

After a bit of lunch and a third Green Tea hit I was set to find out the latest developments in treating Rosacea.
This progressive, inflammatory, vascular disorder is recognised by facial flushing/blushing along with spotty outbreaks and capillary damage.
It's something that I see alot of in my clinics and have controlled successfully for clients, but was wonderful to have a new understanding of this disorder that can have such a huge negative impact on somebodies life.

I was lucky to be the model for the skin treatment (yep that hand up reflex was especially quick that time) and to be on the receiving end for once giving me time to reflect on my own signature facial treatment and come up with any additions that I could make.
I drove home feeling studious and brimming with inspiration.

I pride myself on being more than just a Beauty therapist I have an empathy and understanding of the skin that I feel goes a big step further but I'm also not afraid to put my hand up once in a while and increase my skills.

Words from the treatment room...

Love, passion, excitement, enthusiasm...these are all words that describe how I feel about my chosen profession. No really!!

I am so lucky to be working for myself in a profession that allows me to help build and develop people's confidence.

It's not just about giving a relaxing facial it's about working to change someone's perspective on their skin and sometimes their outlook on life as a result.
I was so humbled and delighted when some of my client's sent me their thoughts about the treatments I had delivered.

It's comments like this that make my work so worthwhile and inspire me to keep growing and learning as a skin therapist....thank you....

'I've been seeing Louise for 6 months - a monthly facial - and my skin has never been better. I've seen a huge improvement in skin tone (annoying brown spots diminished) so my skin looks even, enlarged pores reduced and, dare I say it, my skin looks radiant I'm normally 'promiscuous' with skincare and regimes - always convinced the new product I read about will do the trick - but I'm glad I've stayed the course and followed Louise's advice. Plus it's a heavenly de-stressing experience!'

(Read more: http://www.beautywoome.com/beautyblog/u-treatment-facial-reviewed.html#ixzz12BFu53dm)

'Now I have to tell you Louise, I am so pleased with the improvement in my skin!! The small spots are still underneath, but the inflammation has gone, and the colour has completely evened out!! Even my husband agreed it was worth it! x '

'Thank you very much for my skin consultation and facial last week. It was great to meet you and feel like I'd finally found someone who understood my skin and could help me with it. The facial was extremely relaxing and I came away feeling confident we could improve the condition of my skin!'

Part 2 of: How to Winter proof your skin...

As promised here's Part 2 of my 'How to Winter proof your skin'.
Get on board with the following 2 top tips and you'll be on your way to happy skin.

Problem: Uncomfortable tightness.

Louise recommends: Dehydration is the term coined by the cosmetic industry to describe the tight, creapy appearance that’s down to a lack of water in the skin. Its a lot more complex than this, however, upping your fluid intake can help. Limit diuretics like caffeine and increase water and herbal teas.

Tip: Buy a humidifier for your home or office to create a more hydrating atmosphere for your skin.

Problem: Spotty, oily skin.

Louise recommends: If your skin is parched it will try and help out by secreting more oil onto the skin. This can lead to an oily shine and blocked follicles resulting in outbreaks. Gentle exfoliation will sweep the pores clean and limit spotty eruptions.

Tip: Using a product containing AHA’s will be a more effective and can also re balance the oil secreting glands.

Remember it’s still important to protect your skin with an SPF everyday despite the lack of sun, since UV rays are present all year round.

A change of season is the perfect excuse for booking a professional facial. I offer skin health checks as part of my treatments to reassess your skin and ensure you get that healthy, rosy winter glow.

How to winter proof your skin...

We seem to be having a slow start to the usual cold snap of winter that October brings but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't think about 'winter proofing' your skin already.

With central heating going on, brisk winds, bracing rain and the possibility of some of the white stuff, we need to think about protecting our delicate outer layer from these harsh and ever changing elements.

I am going to walk you through the 3 most common skin issues that I see on my clients as we change season's and help you to avoid them.

- Problem: Dry and flaky.

- Louise Recommends: Any moisturiser worth entertaining should contain ingredients that are found in our skin. I use and recommend to my clients products that contain Hyaluronic acid, the moisture binding component of the dermis.

- Tip: Apply your moisturiser to slightly damp skin this will further enhance its humectant properties and make your product go a little further.

Remember that your home care regime should change with the season so feel free to contact me to give you a winter 'skin health' check.

Are you prepared to be a 'facial filler guinea pig'?

We are a generation obsessed with looking and feeling younger and one of the key reasons that my clients keep coming back to me for their regular facials is to slow down this process and to stay looking younger for longer.

It is known, that Im not a huge fan of cosmetic procedures since we ae all to eager to jump on the 'quick fix' bandwagon rather than looking at ways to improve our longterm skin health and maintain the signs of youth.

However, if I have clients who are insistant upon having such procedures then I arm myself with an acredited doctor that I can refer them to.

I think it's so important that as a skin therapist I make you all aware of the fact that out of the 147 injectable fillers available in the UK (those that are designed to plump fines lines and wrinkles) only 7 are approved by the FDA! (an american body that monitors the safety and efficacy of new cosmetic procedures.

This approval means that there have been clinical studies and trials to safe guard their use.

It really scares me to think that people are so desperate to hang onto youth that they maybe having products injected into their skin that have little, or no, studies to prove that they are safe and effective....this leads to those horror stories that we have all heard or read about of when these procedures go wrong.

If you really feel the need to go down this route then always ask for the name of the filler to be used so you can check its FDA approved and go to the British association of cosmetic doctors website to get an approved prectitioner.

It goes without saying that I get great results for my clients who are concerned with the ageing process by using my 3 dimensional approach to treating the skin.
This along with cosmeceutical grade products, facial yoga and my fusion facial massage leaves the skin looking firmer, brighter and fresher.
No unrealistic claims made and no 'Guinea pigs' in sight.....

Computers..Are they ageing you?

Something that I have always taught my clients & beauty students is that we are exposed to UV rays all year round.
It doesn't have to be a bright, hot, sunny day to get skin damage from the sun & with a whopping 90 % of the skin's ageing coming from those rays, that lesson usually got them reaching for their daily environmental shield.
However, I then always go onto say that you shouldn't feel smug if you simply don't actually see much of the light of day during your working week as you are trapped in your offices & so don't expose yourself to much of that daily UV anyway.
This is beacuse computers & those really unflattering office lights also omit rays that are damaging to your skin.
Now this seems to be a 'hot topic' in some of the latest glossies but is something I have been talking (preaching) about for years!
Its another reminder as to why we need to use an environmental shield (so a product with an spf but that's protecting your skin from a
lot more than just the sun) everyday!
Look for ingredients such as Zinc or Titanium oxide which are a natural way of reflecting those harmful rays.
So now your armed with another way of looking younger for longer.
And while were on that topic stop squinting while your reading this to avoid 'computer face' which is a new brand of lines & wrinkles exaperated by glaring at your pc.

Eat your way to a hydrated skin...

It goes without saying that water is a vital component to our bodies not just our skin.
One of the pieces of advice I continually give is to ensure that my clients are getting their daily quota of water intake.
This is advice that isn't faddy, radical or the latest scientific research but it is so important & can be detremental to the health of our skin.

I am sometimes met with a sneer at the suggestion that we need to take on board 1 1/2 to 2 litres of water per day & have to confess that drinking water doesn't 'excite' me but I think of it as a form of medicine that my body & my skin needs to function properly.
Dry skin, spotty outbreaks, senstivity & even oily skin can all be as a result of a lack of hydration.

But fear not! You don't have to line up your bottles of Evian (other good quality mineral water is available) as your daily quota can be made up from other sourrces too.
Consider if you have any of the following in your daily diet & give yourself a pat on the back for any that you can tick off & take off your water intake:

- fresh friut &/or vegetable juices
- Green, White, Herbal or Fruit teas
- Fruit & Veg especially Spinach, Melon, Apricots & Cucumbers. These are high in water & packed with anti ageing Vitamins too.

My signature 'U and your skin' facial surrounds the thought process that you need to treat your skin from the inside out.

S.O.S How to get rid of that spot!!!

So for those of you who dont know, one of the reasons that i decided to specialise in skin health & develop my own signature facial (U and your skin) was because of my own battles with Acne.

I know only to well the agnony, in some cases literal, of waking up in the morning, normally on the day of a special event...Wedding day, first date, meeting the inlaws...only to find a huge zit staring back at you in the mirror.

After the initial 'Arrrggghhhh!!!' We then do the 'Ok so if I squeeze it, it will be fine' then the 'Ooooo I know concealer...lots of concealer', not an option for the guys.

So how do I zap my zits, I hear you ask (yes I still get the odd outbreak too) well Im a huge fan of the MD Formulations skin perfection gel (£21) which is a sure fire way to remedy that invader pretty quickly.
However, here's a little trick for those of you who I have yet to introduce to the above said product or for those of you who have temporarily run out.

Crush an aspirin & mix with a little water to form a paste.
Apply to the spot & then leave for at least 10 minutes or preferably over night.

The secret.....Aspirin contains Salycylic acid which is amazing for sweeping the pore clean, allowing Oxygen in to kill off the bacteria and will reduce inflammation & heal.

Q. I’ve been battling with Roseacea on my cheeks for ages. What can I do to tone down redness and prevent it from spreading to other parts of my face?

A. Roseacea, sometimes incorrectly referred to as Acne Roseacea, is a vascular disorder of the skin.
It is a complex problem to treat since there is no real concrete evidence as to the cause.
It usually manifests itself on people in their early 30’s and coupled with redness across the cheeks, can be identified as having pustular spotty outbreaks and surface dryness and tightness.
As a skin therapist one of my first areas to address is product use.
Products containing high levels of alcohol should be avoided as should those that are highly perfumed and have ingredients such as lanolin, all of which can aggravate the skin condition.
I use, and recommend, products that contain capillary strengtheners such as Liquorice, Raspberry leaf, Green Tea and Vitamin B3.
My philosophy has always been to treat the skin from the inside out and I work with Nutritional therapists to achieve this.
With Roseacea it usually has associations with poor digestive health so increasing the healthy flora of the gut and avoiding dietary triggers can help.
Foods to avoid could be:
Dairy products, Alcohol, Spicy foods, Caffeine, sugar and processed foods.
Foods to embrace are:
Bright coloured fruits and vegetables, Water, Essential fat rich foods such as raw nuts and seeds, Avocado’s and oily fish.
I have achieved positive results for my clients who suffer with this disorder; however, realistic goals have to be set.
At the end of my signature ‘U and your skin’ facials I apply Bare Escentuals mineral make up which not only heals and protects but is a great way to tone down redness without undoing the hard work of your facial treatment.

If you want to get your Roseacea under control then a ‘U and your skin’ facial can help.

Is beauty skin deep?

Is beauty skin deep? Nope it goes a lot deeper than that and I’m not just talking about finding beauty in peoples personality, although that is, of course, worth far more than just their outward appearance.
I am talking about the root to glowing skin, the basis of a lot of skin problems and the area that had become a passion of mine and an integral part of the facial treatments I provide to my loyal clients. What is this Holy Grail I hear you cry? Nutrition, diet, food, grub, tucker, whatever you call it what we put in will, ultimately, one way or another, sooner or later, determine what we look like on the outside.
I take comfort in the fact that those people who regularly tuck into junk food, caffeine laden beverages, binge on alcohol, will, at some stage, see the error of their ways staring back at them in the mirror.
Now don’t get me wrong, I have in my life so far, dabbled with all of the above and then made a conscious effort to change my lifestyle for the sake of my Acne suffering skin to be delighted with the huge improvement. I still have to deal with the odd outbreak, but treating my skin and my clients from the inside out has positive benefits, so much so I now collaborate with a nutritional therapist to target general skin health, skin problems or to fight the ageing process.
It still fascinates me the fact that Acne, Rosacea, Eczema, Psoriasis and ageing of the skin are all exasperated and affected by diet. Having an understanding of this gets to the route of the problem and can start the healing process from within. Doesn’t it just make sense?
Below are some one size fits all nutrition advice targeting improved skin health; however you should seek advice of your GP and a good nutritional therapist (I can recommend one) before making any drastic dietary changes.
• Now I know I’ve mentioned this before, but it really does make you feel like you’ve had a spring clean from within. Drink hot water with a wedge of fresh lemon squeezed in, on an empty stomach first thing in the morning.
• When it comes to anti ageing think anti oxidants. These are found in all brightly coloured fruit and vegetables. Blueberries, carrots, sweet potatoes and spinach are particularly good. These nutrients mop up the scavengers of youth called free radicals.
• Drink at least one and a half litres of water a day. I know it’s boring and a piece of advice we read about everywhere but that’s because it’s so vital if you want your skin to function properly.
• Eat seeds. Pumpkin, sunflower, flax and hemp all contain the essential fats that form the building blocks of our skin.
• Drink green or white tea packed with anti oxidants not only does this fight ageing but it stimulates the metabolism, detoxifies and can inhibit pigmentation so great if you have age spots on your skin.
• A little of what you fancy is good. A small glass of red wine or a few squares of 70% cocoa chocolate has benefits to the skin as well as the body as a whole, but don’t get greedy or it will have a deteriating effect.

So next time you head to the supermarket or local store don’t just search in the skincare product aisles for the answer to your skin issues as a healthy skin starts in the fruit and veg section.

Q. I am 40 years old, I like the sun and getting a tan during the summer months. What is the best way to treat/protect my skin so that I can get a tan

Q. I am 40 years old, I like the sun and getting a tan during the summer months. What is the best way to treat/protect my skin so that I can get a tan but safely?

A. Us Brits just love the sun and do have this ongoing obsession with being brown, almost to a competitive level when we jet off to sunny climbs that we must have a better tan than our friends on our return.

I am going to start the answer to this question by saying that yes we do need levels of UV to stay healthy since the sun is our best source of Vitamin D production (vital for bone health and for boosting our immune systems which is probably why in the winter months we are more susceptible to colds and flu).
However we only need 15-20 minutes of sun exposure 3-4 times a week to achieve this level and therefore there is no need or excuse for baking ourselves until we resemble a lobster to achieve this.

A Tanned skin is a damaged skin since the ironic fact that we go brown, is your skin desperately trying to protect the lower layers from damage.

UVA is present 365 days of the year and since UVA causes 90% of the ageing process of our skin (lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, dryness, saggy/baggy skin) it makes sense to protect everyday if you want to stay looking younger for longer.

The more important and pressing issue is, of course, skin cancer.
One study, from the cancer research UK website, estimated that at least 100,000 cases are diagnosed each year.

Below are my top five tips for staying safe and younger when the sun does shine down on us.

• Protect you skin everyday with an environmental shield. As a skin therapist I love and recommend to my clients the MD Formulations total protector SPF 30 which at £15.00 (www.u-treatments.co.uk) gives you the best and broadest protection against UVA and UVB and is endorsed by the skin cancer foundation.

• Avoid sun exposure between the hours of 12 noon and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest and wear a hat and sunglasses to optimise your protection.

• Use skincare products that contain anti oxidants. Ingredients that fall into this category are Vit A, C and E, Green Tea, Super oxide dismutase and Lycopene. UV creates free radicals within the body which are the ‘thieves of youth’ and lead to precancerous changes. Anti oxidants mop up these highly destructive molecules and slow down skin damage.

• Use a self tanning product. There are some very good quality products available now which are easy to apply and that give you a healthy yet safe tan. Always exfoliate the skin first to remove dead skin and I suggest applying these products a couple of hours before bed so when you wake your tan will be developed.

• Don’t use sunbeds!! These are a dangerous way of achieving a tan since they can become addictive and can be 3 times as strong as the sun exposure experienced in the Mediterranean. Do not be lured into thinking that this is a good way of ‘preparing’ your skin for your summer holiday which is something I hear all the time.

Q. I have just ended a two week spiral of parties as a result of finishing University and don’t want to arrive home for the summer looking grey, spotty and tired.
Help!

A.
Hmmm lack of sleep, too much alcohol, bad diet and probably a few too many nights of sleeping in your make up will take its toll.
But hey I’m not here to lecture you you’ve had enough of that, so here’s how to get that preppy spring back into your skin.

• Lack of sleep – now this might sound an obvious thing to say but you really need to get a few quality nights of sleep in. That means bed before 10pm, after a warm bath infused with Lavender and Geranium oil, and rising before 9am the next day.
There is scientific evidence to show that a lack of sleep will speed up the ageing process so get those peepers closed.

• Too much alcohol – If you have been over indulging on the celebratory shandies then firstly increase your water intake, secondly give your Liver and skin a helping hand by taking Milk Thistle tincture and thirdly treat the water loss (aka dehydration) that your skin will be suffering from, by applying a thirst quenching mask.
I’m a big fan of MD Formulation Moisture Defense anti oxidant hydrating mask which acts like a sponge attracting and binding moisture into the skin.

• Stop sleeping in your make up – It’s a cardinal sin for the skin.
Not only will you be blocking your follicles (pores) with dyes, mineral oils, waxes and talc’s leading to outbreaks, but you will also be putting your skin through the hell of having chemicals on the surface during the hours when your skin does all its repairing and regenerating.
The result, lines, wrinkles and a grey, sallow, spotty skin.
The only exception to the rule (occasionally) is wearing Bare Escentuals 100% mineral make up.

Could stress be ruining your skin?

Q. Could stress be ruining your skin?

A.
Fast paced lives, social commitments; carving out a career, having a family, marriage and friends gives us all an element of stress in our lives to one degree or another.

Many clients that I see that have a skin issue can recollect a stressful stage in their lives.

The problem comes when we constantly subject our bodies to stress rather than reserving it for when we need it to help us to run away from a scary situation or get us through a job interview.

Ongoing stress leads to these useful chemicals, at times like these, being released all of the time giving rise to stress hormones that start to manifest themselves on the outside.

Part of my philosophy as a skin therapist is treating the skin from the inside out and this doesn’t just mean looking at your diet, it can be helping with stress management too.

So what can we see occurring on the skin when stress is the underlying cause?

One client came to me after a sudden outbreak of spots along her jaw line and neck.
She couldn’t understand why this problem had started as she had never suffered in the past.

After the initial in depth consultation and analysis it became apparent that a relationship breakdown, new job and house move was enough to send Cortisol (a stress hormone) coursing through her body.
This resulted in a rise in oil production and inflammation hence her ‘Stress acne’.

After a course of treatments, which in them selves helped to de stress, some homecare adjustments and some lifestyle advice we started to win the battle and kept things under control. The problem completely subsided as the stress became more manageable.

It’s also this same stress hormone that can cause premature ageing since the inflammation caused as a result will contribute towards lines and wrinkles coupled with the fact we are more likely to reach for a cigarette or G and T to help us to relax. So in fact we increase the stress levels even more by stimulating the release of these hormones.
It’s a vicious circle.

Stress might be difficult to wipe out of your life but it can be wiped from your face.

Why have a professional facial rather than a DIY one?

To ensure you gain the correct homecare and skin related lifestyle advice.

Drink water? Don’t drink water, some alcohol good? Avoid alcohol, scrub daily? don’t scrub daily.

We are constantly bombarded with news and opinions about what is good for our skin and sometimes take this advice from people that are not qualified in any aspect of beauty let alone had a treatment themselves.

At number 4 of why you should have a regular facial is: to improve your skin condition or eradicate a problem.

Q. I have read about ‘DIY’ facial kits that you can buy. Are they any good and will they replace a facial?

A.
At number 4 of why you should have a regular facial is: to improve your skin condition or eradicate a problem.

I’m no magician nor do I claim to be, however I increasingly have clients coming to me to assist them with a specific skin concern.

My own fascination with and knowledge of the skin grew as a result of my own Acne related battles so I know only too well the limitations of my skills.

I have, however, successfully treated clients with Acne, Rosacea, Sun damage, Pigmentation and Psoriasis and put it down to the holistic bespoke approach of my treatments and the cosmeceutical (grade above a cosmetic) grade of products that I use and recommend.

No two cases of a skin issue are the same so I don’t use a set, for example, Acne protocol but treat the individual case as required.

The skincare market is a multi billion pound industry and is minefields of promises to clear, brighten, anti age, calm and rehydrate our skins.

If you want to dodge the mines then booking a U andyourskin tm facial is the way to clearer, brighter, younger, calmer, hydrated skin.

Q. I have read about ‘DIY’ facial kits that you can buy. Are they any good and will they replace a facial?

A.
1. Mmmm massage....

The feedback that I gain from my clients is that aside from having their ‘blackheads’ squeezed massage is the part of a facial that they find the most worthwhile.

Let’s remind ourselves of the benefits of massage to our skin:

• It increases blood circulation. This aids in the transportation of Oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells to ensure that your skin remains in good health and has what it needs to function efficiently, which is one of the reasons that your diet plays an integral role in maintaining skin health.

• It aids in the elimination of toxins. The skin is an organ of elimination and massage will speed up this process by increasing the flow of Lymph. This fluid carries the waste around our bodies and unlike the blood circulatory system does not have the assistance of a heart to pump it round, so relies on us to move or your therapist to massage it around the body.

• Firming and toning for the skin and muscles of the face and neck. I use a fusion of massage techniques in my bespoke facial treatments one of which can help to life and tone your skin and give you that, as one of my clients said, ‘holiday glow’.

• Relaxation. An opportunity to relax and improve your wellbeing. De stressing the body.

There are no skilled massage hands in your DIY kit.

Q. I have read about ‘DIY’ facial kits that you can buy. Are they any good and will they replace a facial?

A.
1. To give your skin a deep cleanse.

A good facial treatment should include some method of deep cleansing. It’s the one part of the treatment that gives you that squeaky clean, bright, blocked follicle (pore) blitzing glow as a result.
Some of the remedies you may experience are enzymatic peels, fruit acid washes or stimulating scrubs that gently munch away at dirt, grime, oil and dead cells.

I also, as a skin therapist, like to go back to basics for some clients and use a facial brush to achieve these benefits.

A method of warming the skin can sometimes also be used, such as steam, hot compresses, paraffin wax or infa red lamps since heat will help to soften the skin and open the follicles (pores) thus aiding in the ‘good’ riddance of impurities.

Then there is the holy grail of grime busting….extraction….known to those on the street as the bit when the therapist ‘squeezes any blackheads’. Although I don’t believe in subjecting the skin to too much of this it has to be said that ask any skin therapist and they will tell you the sheer delight we have in performing this task for you.

We are not disgusted by your blocked chins and noses but love nothing more than the satisfaction of seeing those little plugs of grime pop out of the skin.

You won’t find the skilled extraction techniques of a therapist in any box of product.

Q. I have read about ‘DIY’ facial kits that you can buy. Are they any good and will they replace a facial?

Q. I have read about ‘DIY’ facial kits that you can buy. Are they any good and will they replace a facial?

A. Even I as a skin therapist, have to remind myself of the virtues of having a professional facial treatment.
I thought, therefore, I would remind you too and over the next 5 weeks give you 5 reasons to have a facial.

I do get quite cross by the suggestions that an over the counter cosmetic range can be a substitute for my, soon to be, 14 years of skin treating experience so reason no 1has to be:

1. To find out your correct skin type and condition.

Any skin therapist worth their weight should always start with a full and detailed consultation. This is to a) determine your medical history and to ensure that you can have the treatment, b) to determine your true skin type and condition and c) to allow a treatment and homecare plan to be devised. These are amongst other important fact finding issues.

For those of you that read my previous blogs, you will know that it is virtually impossible to have your skin type determined without a thorough consult and skin analysis minus your make up.

You certainly won’t get this from buying a DIY facial kit and you maybe using products that could be aggravating your skins condition.

This was one of the reasons I developed the U andyourskin tm facial. This bespoke skin treatment takes a 3 dimensional approach to treating your skin by working with science, nutrition and holistic therapies.

It pulls on all of my ever growing skin related knowledge which you certainly can’t find on the side of a product box.

Q. What can I do if my skin is both dry and oily?

Q. What can I do if my skin is both dry and oily?

A. I’m so pleased that you didn’t mention the term ‘combination’ skin; since this is a phrase adopted by the cosmetic industry and is not classed as a majority skin type.

Your skin will fall into one of three categories (read my previous blogs on ‘What type are you?’ for further details) and so what you are experiencing will be conditions that as a skin therapist I would work to control and remedy.
The following are some tips to assist you with controlling your skin at home; however you should seek the professional advice of a skin therapist to ascertain your true skin type.

• Use a fruit acid based cleanser twice daily to sweep the follicles (pores) clean and balance oil secretion, whilst sloughing away surface dead skin cells from drier areas.

• Water, water everywhere…drink it! At least 1 ½ litres a day.

• Use hydrating, soothing products on drier areas that contain anti oxidants to protect the skin cells and gentle, deep cleansing and balancing products on oilier, congested areas.

• Use light weight, non-comodegenic moisturisers (wont clog pores) to hydrate but not add excess oil to oilier areas.

Q. Does going on a detox diet have any benefits to the skin?

Q. Does going on a detox diet have any benefits to the skin? I am thinking of going on such a diet.

A. Detoxifying the body certainly has benefits to the skin; since it’s our largest organ and one of elimination hence the ‘outbreaks’ that people tend to get as a result of over indulgences.
However, I do not advocate these ‘extreme’ supplementation detox packages where you are forcing the body to go through a process of elimination.

It can be beneficial to cut out the following from the diet for a period of 7-28 days: Alcohol, sugar, wheat, dairy, processed foods and meat and replace with lots of water, veg and fruit juices/smoothies, oily fish, nuts and seeds and a diet abundant in a rainbow of fruits and vegetables.

However as with most things it should become a way of life not just a quick fix and an excuse to over indulge and abuse our bodies.

As a skin therapist I recommend the following to aid in gaining a clearer, brighter skin;

1. Drink hot water with a wedge of lemon and some grated ginger at the start and end of your day.
2. Take Milk thistle supplement to support the liver (a main organ of detoxification).
3. Dry skin brush before every shower, upwards and towards the heart.
4. Use steam in the form of steam rooms or localise and steam the face. (Avoid if you have high blood pressure, sensitive/vascular skin or severe Acne)

Make it a lifestyle change! Stick to the 90/10 rule (being good 90% of the time)
The facial I have developed, ‘U and your skin’, encompasses the treating your skin inside and out approach and uses advice endorsed by Nutritional therapists.
Reducing Alcohol, sugar and processed foods will also have anti ageing benefits since eating/drinking these things will increase the ‘free radicals’ within the body which are the ‘thieves of youth!’.

Q. I have noticed after I have shaved, that I have spots and redness around my neck in the shirt collar area.

Q. I have noticed after I have shaved, that I have spots and redness around my neck in the shirt collar area.
What is this and is there anything I can do to help?

A. It’s so nice to have a male perspective on skincare so thank you for asking this question as I suspect we can help a lot of men out there who suffer with this problem.

What you are experiencing is trauma to the skin as a result of the regular act of shaving but you don’t need to put up with this.
This problem will be exasperated by the heat and friction caused by wearing a shirt and the spots are likely to be ingrown hairs that have been trapped under the skin by dead cells and oil.
Below is my guide to how to shave for improved skin health and a closer shave.

• Always gently wash the face first with a soap free wash and warm the skin by holding a clean wash cloth on the area to be shaved for 2 minutes before.

• If you wet shave then change your blades regularly and if you dry shave then ensure your shaver is clean and oiled on a regular basis.

• Avoid using shave foams, gels and soaps as these are heavily alkaline based, great for softening the hair but awful for skin health since they strip away protective oils and moisture causing ‘shaving rash’ and leading to spotty outbreaks.

• I recommend MD Formulations sensitive facial cleanser (£24.00 www.uandyourskin.co.uk) to my male clients since they can wash and shave with this. Containing Glycolic acid this product will sweep the follicles clean and prevent the ingrowing hairs and help you get you a close shave.

• Hydrate, soothe and protect after your shave with MD Formulations moisture defense spf 20 (£35.00 www.uandyourskin.co.uk) This lightweight formula will guard your skin without leaving an oily residue.

• Don’t do a Macaulay Culkin and apply any aftershave or Eau De Toilette to your face. They have a high alcohol content and aside from causing you to scream into the mirror, will dry and irritate your face.

When should you start using an anti ageing skincare product?

Q. When should you start using an anti ageing skincare product?
I am 23 and not sure if I should start worrying about it yet.

A. As with most things prevention is better than cure and since, rather depressingly, the ageing process starts at age 18 it’s never too early.
In our early twenties, depending on how many extrinsic factors you have exposed your skin to i.e. sun, smoking, alcohol, you can expect subtle changes to the skin’s appearance.
A change in pore size, moisture content, fine lines around the eyes and mild atrophy (sagging) of muscle tone, could be present.
The first, and still the most important, product you should be using is one that contains a SPF of at least 15. Sun is still the no.1 cause of skin ageing and you should protect against its harmful effects everyday.
Another good addition to your bathroom cabinet should be a product that contains anti oxidants.
Ingredients like Vitamin A, C, E and Green tea are all anti oxidants and work to ‘mop up’ Free radicals which are the ‘thieves of youth’.
Free radicals are harmful molecules that are prevalent as a result of sun exposure, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and exposure to pollution.
A fab product that will give you all of the above protection is MD Formulations Moisture Defense spf20 cream (£35.00 www.uandyourskin.co.uk) this lightweight formula is an amazing defence against premature ageing and is a great place to start.

What type are you?

What type are you?
Gently does it, is the approach to, what’s commonly know as a sensitive skin type. We professionals refer to it as permanent diffused redness.
Once again, for the basic low down read on, and if you would like me to be more specific about you and your skin just ask!
Permanent diffused redness…
What does it look like?
This skin classically has permanent patches of blotchy redness. A tendency to ‘flushing’ of colour across the neck and décolleté are common. It may mark and scar easily.
What will it feel like?
Can feel warm or hot to the touch with an itching sensation present.
This skin tends to age quickly and can be congested or blemished.
What can I do?
Avoid extremes of temperature, hot, spicy foods, alcohol and tea/coffee since all of these will increase blood flow to the skin and aggravate the condition. Protect the skin daily with a good environmental shield. I recommend MD Formulations Moisture defense anti oxidant cream spf20 (www.u-treatments.co.uk)

What type are you?

What type are you?
Hurrah! For the Oily skin types. Well I would say that cos that’s me coupled with some genetic Acne thrown in.
However, as I’ve said before, it’s my personal battle with my skin that has made me the skin therapist I am today.
So for the basic low down read on, and if you would like me to be more specific about you and your skin just ask!
Oily skin…
What does it look like?
The skin has a ‘sheen’ to it, and may look ‘thick’. There will be visible dilated pores in the T-zone area.
The skin may look tired and sallow.
What will it feel like?
Slick and oily to the touch.
There is typically congestion, blemishes and visible oil flow present.
What can I do?
Only use masks for oily skin in the oily areas.
Treat gently! Contrary to popular belief oily skin can be quite sensitised, usually due to incorrect product and treatment use.
Protect from daily UV exposure to preserve the skins immune system and assist in fighting bacterial build up.
Next week: Diffused redness…
Don’t know your Oily shine from your matt sheen? Let me determine your majority skin type. To schedule your bespoke facial treatment; call Louise on 07810 872 633 or email enquiries@u-treatments.co.uk to book your skin health assessment and bespoke facial treatment.

What type are you?

What type are you?
Following on from last weeks blog where I spoke about how to define your skin type and my anguish at cosmetic sales assistants giving product advice after glancing at the customers face fully loaded with make up, I thought I would give you an insight into the majority skin types that as a skin therapist I recognise.
After 13 years in the industry I avoid such terminology that is used by the cosmetic retail market such as ‘combination’ and ‘normal’ skin, since these are unrealistic terms.
The first skin type that I will look at this week is Lipid dry. Remember that this is just a basic overview and for your skin type to be professionally determined you need a full and thorough consult and skin analysis.
Lipid dry skin…
What does it look like?
Dull, rough and worn with a matt appearance and lacking in suppleness.
Milia (small, white, fatty deposits) maybe found around the eye area.
What will it feel like?
Changes in climate may make it feel hot, burning and itchy.
There may also be premature ageing and the skin could be slow to heal.
What can I do?
Avoid drying masks and harsh exfoliants.
Avoid sun exposure and protect skin daily.
Receive facial treatments to specifically target your skins needs.
Next week: Oily skin…

What type are you?

What type are you?
As a skin therapist and specialist I like to keep up to date with the latest going ons in the world that is skincare.
I need to have my finger on the pulse of the latest promises being made to you by the cosmetic companies, whether its to ‘firm and tighten’, ‘banish open pores and oily shine’, or ‘erase lines and wrinkles’. I also regularly research the ingredient technology that’s on the horizon and the scientific data that back up their claims.
I couldn’t help overhearing a conversation recently, whilst doing some research reading the ingredients list on another skincare cosmetic that was claiming to radically turn back the clock in one pot.
The conversation was between a cosmetic company sales assistant and a prospective customer who wanted to invest in a new skincare regime.
‘I’m just not sure if what I’m using is right for my skin type, my skin still feels dry even after moisturising’ said prospective customer. My ears instantly pricked up. ‘Right so you’ve got dry skin then?’ asks sales assistant. ‘Well I think so…I’m not sure, I was hoping you could tell me’ says the customer. I now turn to look at the customer who is quite heavily made up and force my eyes back to the product in my hand. ‘Say nothing’ I think to myself, ‘It’s not your business’.
‘Well’ sales assistant leans towards customer,’ I think you look dry’. I replace product back on the shelf turn on my heels before I have the chance to muscle in on the conversation which would a) have been rude and b) totally patronising to the sales assistant.
It’s this very act that goes on up and down the country in every department and chemist store that really frustrates me and makes me feel for those sales assistants who are expected to give advice on products and peoples skin with, sometimes, little or no training on the organ itself.
I can only ever give advice and diagnose skin types and conditions once I have completed a detailed consultation, removed every scrap of make up and analysed and viewed the skin under close proximity and even then it can take a couple of treatments to establish what’s going on.
How on earth can you give true and correct advice when viewing a customer’s skin when peering over the counter at someone with full make up on? It’s just not possible and so this turns into a ‘sale’ rather than a recommendation of a product.
Skin type V skin condition
Your skin type is genetic, it’s what you are born with there is nothing you can do to change it.
However, as a skin therapist, it’s the skin conditions that are associated with that skin type that can be treated, controlled or remedied.
Over the next few blogs I am going to give you a definition of the three key skin types and some of the associated conditions.
Remember that everybody is unique though and as with my treatments, you cannot be put into a ‘one size fits all’ skin type category.

Part 3: Habits to give the ‘boot’ to for U and your skins sake…

Part 3: Habits to give the ‘boot’ to for U and your skins sake…

We’ve been tackling the bad habits that we should break all in the name of a healthier, younger looking skin.
We’ve looked at the effects, good and bad, of Alcohol and at the second worst thing we can do for our skin, smoking.
In this last of the series we take a look at a substance that we usually associate with weight gain and tooth decay, Sugar!
Yes this vice, whether taken in your tea or coffee, eaten in all things sweet, drank in Alcohol or fizzy drinks or hidden in processed foods, has an effect on how quickly we age.
So if your New Year diet isn’t going well because of your sugar addiction, and yes it is an addiction, then maybe the following will help you to ‘step away from the doughnuts!’
When we eat sugar in excess it causes a process to occur in the body called Glycation.
In simple terms this means that the sugar (glucose) bonds with the proteins in the body. In the skins case this will be Collagen and Elastin fibres.
These fibres form the framework of our Dermal skin layer, providing the strength and resiliency, making the skin appear plump and youthful.
When Glycation occurs it cross links and makes the Collagen and Elastin fibres brittle. They can breakdown causing the dents, dips and furrows in the skin that we refer to as lines and wrinkles. It is possible to see this as obvious grid like networks in severe cases.
As with most vices, moderation is key. Be mindful to cook fresh, wholesome food to eliminate hidden sugars that can be in sauces, tinned produce and ready meals to name but a few. Don’t forget that it is not always listed as sugar. Glucose, Fructose and Sucrose are all forms of sugar.
Secondly utilise skincare products that contain ingredients that will act as ‘sugar traps’. Peptides are one such ingredient.
As part of my combating ageing facial treatments I am on the look out for the signs of Glycation and treat from the inside as well as the outside.
The good news…is that there have been some very good evidence based studies on the benefits of consuming small amounts of 70% cocoa dark chocolate.
Dark chocolate is rich in anti oxidants helping to mop up the harmful free radicals and is also lower in sugar and dairy. Opt for a vegan brand for an even healthier fix.
In conclusion…we all do need a little of what we fancy so don’t despair that you can never have your cake and eat it, just be grateful for the times you indulge rather than partaking in the excessive binge culture.

Part 2: Habits to give the ‘boot’ to for U and your skins sake…

Part 2: Habits to give the ‘boot’ to for U and your skins sake…

Continuing on from last weeks blog about the effects of Alcohol on the skin, this week I’m going to focus on another vice, which, at this time of the year, may fall into a habit that you want to give the boot to.
The following maybe an incentive to help you.
Smoking is number two in line of the worst lifestyle habits that we choose to put our bodies and our skin through. Sun still tops the list as our skins worst enemy.
As with Alcohol, smoking has a stimulating effect on the micro circulation of our skin. Remember that this superficial capillary network is vital for feeding our cells and tissues with Oxygen and nutrients and for removing toxic build up. The continued vasodilatation and constriction of these delicate blood vessels can cause damage to their porous walls, thus affecting their ability to oxygenate, feed and then free the skin of waste material.
Look at any smokers skin and you will see the evidence of this appearing as a grey, sallow appearance, deficient in moisture, maybe with spotty outbreaks, visible capillary damage and of course, deep lines and wrinkles.
Still reaching for your lighter? Then read on.
Smoking is one of the lifestyle choices that stimulate the production of free radicals in our body. These unstable molecules wreak havoc and are the ‘thieves of youth’. They course their way round the body causing damage to the proteins in the skin, Collagen and Elastin fibres (there’s your lines and wrinkles); affect the DNA of our cells leading to possible pre cancerous changes.
Then there are the faces that smokers pull. Contorting when dragging on a cigarette gives rise to ‘crow’s feet’ around the eyes and lines around the mouth as well as unsightly blocked follicles that may appear as blackheads or spots and the skin takes on a yellowy hue. Come on you must have extinguished that fag now…right?
All is not lost, it is never too late to, firstly give up and secondly start to repair some of the damage caused to the skin.
Anti oxidants both topically and orally are the first good habit to adopt. Vitamin C in particular is crucial for collagen production and for strengthening that capillary network. 1 cigarette destroys the same amount of Vitamin C as found in 2 whole oranges!
Give yourself an incentive. Several of my clients have started to invest the money, usually reserved for their cigarette habit, on regular skin treatments and active products as a way of reminding them why they are giving up and to reverse some of the visible damage.

What effect are those bad habits having on your skin?

What’s your vice then? A large glass of red wine to help you unwind after a hard days work? A chocolate covered biscuit to dunk in your cup of afternoon tea? That cigarette that you just have to have to deal with the stresses of modern life? Or a handful (half a tub) of sunflower seeds that you just have to have pre dinner…..? Yep ok the last sad addiction is mine…could be worse!!
All this over indulgence after the festive season, and yes I did over indulge and no not just on sunflower seeds, got me to thinking that its usual at this time of year to want to kick some of our bad habits and set ourselves that new years resolution (if you haven’t read last weeks blog then Hello! Where have you been?)
So I thought I would, over the next four weeks, take a closer look at the above vices and their negative, and in one case, positive effects on our skin. What are these bad habits are doing to your complexion and some little tips on how you can maybe repair a bit of the damage caused.
This week its; Alcohol…
The immediate effect of your G & T, glass of wine or pint of lager is to cause a flushing sensation in the skin. This varies, in degree, from person to person, however even if you don’t end up looking like you’ve been extremely embarrassed or just stepped out of a sauna, it doesn’t mean that these little blood vessels aren’t working away madly. Now this action, in small doses, has actually, according to research, been found to be beneficial to not only your skin but the whole of your circulatory system. It’s when we start to abuse the quantities of alcohol that this constant constriction and dilation of those little capillaries eventually causes them to become damaged. In some cases they can be seen under the surface of the skin and in lamens terms maybe referred to as broken capillaries.
These not only look unsightly, but are no longer able to do their job which is to ferry Oxygen and vital nutrients to our skin cells to keep our skin looking healthy.
Alcohol is also a diuretic, which tends to be what gives us the hangover. Our body is forced to lose water and unless replaced can lead to headaches and nausea, need I go on. This dehydration is seen on our skins as obvious areas of dryness, sallow colour, and fine, creapy lines.
Then there’s the obvious fact that excessive alcohol consumption causes extra stress on the Liver. I am expecting to see a lot of this effect manifesting itself in my clients skin as outbreaks usually in the mid lower forehead area, since in Chinese philosophy they believe that this area of the face is linked with the Liver.
Help!!... is at hand quite literally as if you have had one of my bespoke facial treatments you will know that my treatments are about taking an inside/out approach to treating the skin. Aside from having professional treatments with a skin therapist and specialist you can start by reducing your consumption and increasing your water intake. This is quite an obvious first step to improving your skins chances of recovery.
Next I suggest taking the tincture of Milk Thistle which is a great Liver support and will aid detoxification.
Look for moisturisers that contain ingredients that will act as ‘Osmoprotectors’ these are molecules that help to attract and bind moisture into your skin. All the products I use and recommend have this ability.
And finally, if you look forward to your weekend tipple then swap spirits for wine or beer and drink plenty of water with your alcohol to stave of that morning after the night before reflection in the mirror.

New year..new U..

New year …new U…

It’s a little obscene, don’t you think, our obsession with looking to a new year before we have even had a chance to eat way too much turkey, drink too much bubbly and jig around to ‘ole Lang syne’ pretending we know all the words. But the promise of a newer, brighter, fitter, happier, younger looking, svelte you is everywhere as the January magazine editions hit the news stands in December.

It’s these types of articles and media hype that come around every year forcing us to all fall into the ‘new years resolution’ trap and ultimately, come February, have failed miserably to achieve any of what we set out to do.

As part of my bespoke facial treatments, I like to not only give product related homecare advice, but little snippets of lifestyle skin health related changes that can be started the minute you have had your treatment and that can be easily achieved.

Like anything in life, whether it’s to become more confident, drop post Christmas weight or gain a glowing, healthy skin, it’s a gradual process that can’t be sustained by quick fixes.

Setting SMART targets (that’s Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time scale) is the way forward and if you read my ‘12 days to glowing Christmas skin…. ’ blog, you should already be well on the way.

Why wait for January the 1st, it just puts you under more pressure to achieve your goals, when you could already be on your way to optimum skin health.

That said if your struggling for the motivation or know how to solving your skin problems then make January the excuse to schedule in that facial and let me set your SMART targets to a ‘new U’, or at least a U with a healthier skin. www.u-treatments.co.uk bookings 07810 872 633
