Exciting developments!

It's fair to say I have been a little 'quiet' of late on my blog writing but I have a few good excuses which, actually, I'll share with you.
Firstly I am (fingers crossed) days away from signing on the dotted line for a new premises for my Norwich 'U and your skin' lounge. It's been a roller coaster few weeks of careful decision making & planning but my new home will be over 3 floors in the lovely 'Lanes' part of Norwich city...I am beyond excited (& a little scared) & just want to get on with the transformation of this beautiful 400 year old building.
So watch this space as I will be Vlogging (Video Blogging) all about it & the progress.

Excuse No 2 is that I have also changed my London venue & am now working from 107 Fleet St. Still under The Wyndham Centre Umbrella its a great & vibrant location so I look forward to welcoming my existing & new clients.

Excuse No 3, for having been so quiet, is that I have been back in 'learning' mode & have just successfully graduated from a course that, after 16 years of being an Electrologist for hair removal, will now allow me to treat Telangectasia (broken facial veins), Skin Tags, Sebboreheic & common warts, Age spots & Milia.I attended the Sterex academy last week in London & had such a great time getting very hands on with all of these skin anomalies which I see so much of as a skin therapist. Its great to now be able to finally eradicate these for people.
I met some great other therapists including a male therapist who qualified the same year I did (1996) & who kindly let me also treat him over the course of the 2 days.

Electrolysis for hair removal is a treatment I have always enjoyed delivering since it also, like my signature facials, has such an impact on people's confidence. It's a well respected method which has been used for 134 years & using this same method to remove the above issues has been around for 101 years, so like everything I do there is alot of positive evidence to support it's success.

I do hope you will feel able to contact me if you are concerned with any of these skin anomalies as I am always happy to discuss & advise.www.uandyourskin.co.uk Norwich . London enquiries@uandyourskin.co.uk

Back to (beauty) School...

September is, for me, the start of a new year. This was the discussion I was having this morning with my husband on the way to the train station bound for my London clinic at The Wyndham Centre.

I decided that it wasn't just to do with the fact that this is my birthday month, but more that it feels like alot changes with the world as we enter Autumn.

Nature has a good old clear out as we see the landscape changing & there is alot of new beginnings as the Schools,Colleges & Universitys all gather in their returning & new students, some more eager than others to embrace a new term.

I can remember the excitement of sporting my new uniform, shoes & school bag equipped with enough supplies that I could have opened my own stationary shop.

So this got me to thinking that even if you are not a student yourself, maybe you also feel like this month is a new start, a new chapter in your life & that we all could do with learning some new skills from time to time.

Here's some 'Back to (beauty) School' skincare tips just for you to make sure you don't feel left out in the playground come break time.

* If you have an early start to your day don't be tempted to skip the morning cleanse. It's so important not to think that just because you have no obvious dirt, grime or make up on your skin that you can get away with this part of your routine. Cleansing in the morning will whisk away dead cells that would have been working hard to turn over as you slept, excess oil & bacterial build up from the skin as well as freshen & wake you up for the lessons ahead.

* Using a good hydrator, preferably laced with Hyaluronic acid &/or argan oil, will keep the skin super moisturised & keep those lines at bay due to the furrowed brows of studying.

* As you work towards your end of term tests it's difficult not to get stressed & therefore get some unwanted spotty outbreaks. Don't be tempted to lean on the 'sugar' to get you through as this is a real skin enemy & if you do get an outbreak then check out my 'How to' video to rescue you from the clutches of the dreaded zit/pimple.

A question about those 'Brown spots' on your skin...

I have had some great questions posed to me lately via email,my facebook & Twitter profiles.
This one in particular was so good that I thought I would share with you my response since Hyper-pigmentation is something that I see & treat alot.
Please do feel free to send your skin related questions to me...I will always do my best to answer them all & you never know it might be yours that gets featured next.

Q. What do you recommend for brown spots I was in the sun and thought I had enough sunscreen on but for some reason I'm getting those spots. I hate to use hydroquionine as a lightener I've heard its not good for the liver and I'm also trying to get pregnant! Is there an effective more gentle alternative?

A. I am with you regarding Hydro quinone, it's not a safe way to treat these 'Brown spots' & I'm so excited to let you know that there is a safe, natural, clinically proven alternative which I have been using in my skin clinics.
The Priori CoffeeBerry range of cosmeceutical products, as well as being extremely anti ageing, have a natural quinoic molecule which means that it whitens & brightens the skin!
It's a must for anyone that has pigmentation, post acne scarring or who wants their skin to be right on trend with the radiant, illuminating skin that is so flattering to all ages.

The power of touch...

I have never been so bold as to call myself 'a healer' or to have 'healing powers'.
This should be reserved for spiritual guru's, Mother Theresa, The Dalai Lama right?
I am, however, a huge believer in the power of touch & as for the last 15 years of my life I have been connecting with people whilst delivering their treatments, I feel that I can sometimes pick up on people's energies.
Now before I lose you all as you think I'm starting to sound a bit like a 'Tree hugger', I definitely feel that, in more recent years that yes client's come to me with their skin issues but that through my unique consultation technique, through my holistic approach to my signature facials that, sometimes, they leave with an extra little, well lets say, 'spring in their step'.

It was just last month that one of my loyal client's in London asked me if I would like some feedback...reluctantly I said yes, since feedback good or bad is a positive to me. She then went onto describe to me what else she gains from her facials with me. That yes her skin was 'Brighter, healthy & had more radiance' but that there was something else that I give out during her 90 minutes with me.
Then there's the client that I've been treating for the whole of my career & has, well really become a very dear friend to me. She has had a very tough life & I have been through alot of those tough times with her. She, every week as she leaves, tells me how much stronger, happier & more positive she feels & does often skip off down the road even though sometimes she has struggled to even get to me.
And then the client who simply said as she left one day 'You do know you are a real healer Louise?'...What?? Me??

So I figure that I'm happy with having a natural ability to empathise with people, to make them feel brighter as well as work on their skin's health, to share some positive energy & thank them for sharing with me their feedback of what they receive as a result of me simply doing something that I love...treating people & their skin.

With Christine's permission I share with you here her 'Feedback'...
'I recently had a facial at a renowned salon in the west end, which uses the same product range as Louise (Louise wasn’t available which is why I ended up there). The therapist was perfectly competent, in fact I couldn’t really fault her in terms of her technique, professionalism, the ambiance and environment. However, I felt quite dissatisfied afterwards and the difference between this experience and Louise’s treatments left me wondering about what it is that makes Louise so special.
I came to the conclusion that the magic in a treatment by Louise, is something over and above technique and professionalism (though she scores very highly on both of these). She is also passionate about what she does, and the products she uses, and her passion is really infectious. But, in addition to all of that, she also has a very special quality which can only be described as Love. She actually loves what she does and she brings love into the room. This is what raises it above a great treatment into a wonderful experience, almost spiritual, leaving you feeling at peace, contented, happy, and just so much better. Elizabeth Gilbert in ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ uses the word “Divinity”. To me, it’s this quality that makes her an artist, rather than a technician'.
– Christine.

Special 'U and your skin week' blog your chance to win a course of my signature facials...

So we're on Day 5 of 'U and your skin week' already!
It's been action packed since the launch at my London clinic last Friday, where I had a packed day of client's coming in to experience the Priori CoffeeBerry products, which I am integrating into my signature treatments.
I also had use of a UV skin scanner so those client's were able to see their underlying UV damage which, although a little daunting, is a positive thing since I am equipped with the tools & knowledge to correct, retard & slow down this process.

On Saturday I was back in Norwich & was so overwhelmed by the response to my 'Afternoon Tea' Priori CoffeeBerry launch which took place in a beautiful room at The Library restaurant.
It was an over subscribed afternoon & after an initial presentation we enjoyed Tea & scones...well the guests did I was a little busy doing mini skin consultations with the skin scanner.

Yesterday I had two fun LIVE facebook chats & so today wanted to give you a few of my 'skin secrets' & also the chance for you to win a course of facials using the Priori CoffeeBerry products.

This course will include 6 Priori CoffeeBerry facials & one of my advanced skin health assessments & consultations.
To be in with a chance you need to be 16 or over & be able to get to either my Norwich skin lounge or my London clinic on Farringdon Rd. Email me with, in no more than 200 words, why you think you deserve to have your skin nurtured back to health :) enquiries@uandyourskin.co.uk the lucky winner will then be informed by email within the next 2 weeks.

In the meantime here's a few of my 'skin secrets' & don't forget to check out www.uandyourskin.co.uk for the rest of the weeks itinerary.

Lack of sleep – now this might sound an obvious thing to say but you really need to get a few quality nights of sleep in. That means bed before 10pm, after a warm bath infused with Lavender and Geranium oil, and rising before 9am the next day.
There is scientific evidence to show that a lack of sleep will speed up the ageing process so get those peepers closed.

Lift the lid on a product packed with ingredients like; Vitamin A, vitamin C, peptides, super oxide dismutase and AHA’s. I use a supercharged cosmeceutical level of ingredients for my clients since one of the functions of the skin is to absorb.

Exercising your body (as well as your face) will increase energy levels, de stress and oxygenate your skin flooding it with fresh nutrients and taking away harmful toxins. Mix it up with some short cardio bursts and Pilates and/or Yoga.

Free skin consultations, advice & an afternoon Tea...

That's it...I've decided...I'm going to take over a week.
I have just so much to share with you all that from Friday 24th June 'U and your skin' will be owning the week.

It will start on the Friday with an event in London at The Wyndham Centre, where I run my London clinic from. I will be joined, for some of the day, by Katy from Cosmeceuticals Ltd who will be bringing along the UV skin scanner & assisting me in offering complimentary skin health assessments (a booking fee will apply).
It will be a great opportunity to see any underlying damage that the naked eye cannot see & be able to act on this before it rears it's ugly head.
I will be launching the Priori Coffeeberry skin care & treatment range & will be able to give you bespoke advice on how to treat your skin from the inside out!

On Saturday the 25th June I will be back in Norwich & will be hosting an 'Afternoon Tea' at one of the lovely private rooms at The Library restaurant. As the week progresses I will be available to chat live via my facebook group to answer your skin related questions & there will be guest blogs, top skin related tips & offers on products & my signature facial treatments.

I would love your feedback on this forthcoming week of events & if there is anything in particular that you would like me to hi light then feel free to let me know.

How the cosmetic industry is misleading you…

I can often be found scoffing at adverts promising huge, instant transformations to your skin.‘Tutt’ loudly at certain TV commercials for skin care products & am regularly dragged away from the skin care counters in large department stores by my husband who is in fear that I will go & assist a customer who is being given misguided advice about their skin, (poor man).
So this led me to think I need to clear up a few ‘Cosmetic industry’ myths that are just not correct or simply do not exist when it comes to skin. Exert my frustration in making you aware of terminology that is just ‘marketing slang’.

Skin types:

There is no such thing, in my opinion as a skin therapist, as a ‘Combination skin type’!
I get cross when I see this written on products (sometimes even the professional ones will use this) as you are not born with this skin type it does'nt exist.
There are only 3 majority skin types & once I have determined which one you are these ‘Combination skin type’ traits are then what we call skin conditions.
You may have oil secretion, open pores (follicles), areas that are lipid dry but this does not equate to a ‘Combination skin.’
You are born with your skin type, we cannot change this, what we can do, however, is treat the conditions that your skin develops due to hormonal changes, pollution, damage, incorrect product use…

Dehydrated skin:

This is another well used incorrect term. The cosmetic industry uses this as a ‘Lamens’ term to describe what I would call ‘Transepidermal water loss’. (TEWL)
TEWL is where the water content of your skin has/is escaping, evaporating from the Epidermis. It is usually to do with an impaired Lipid barrier something of which I am always educating my client’s about as it plays such an integral part in many skin issues & conditions.
You can recognise TEWL by its classic traits of fine, creapy lines & it gives a ‘tight’ feeling to your skin. This is usually present after people cleanse & if this happens to you then this is a sign that the cleanser you’re using may not be suitable for you.
When the skin is suffering from TEWL its only way to try & counteract it is by the skin producing more hydrating oil. The problem here is that this imbalances the skin & can sometimes lead to an excessive oily shine, blocked follicles & outbreaks.
A lack of water in the skin also means that its ability to shed dead cells slows down as water is required for this process to take place. A dull, dry, flaky appearance may then also appear.

Pores:
Now this is one that I hear all the time ‘I have really large open pores on my nose’ & shock, horror, guess what ‘pores’ is an incorrect term! Since pores do not secrete the oil onto the skin but pores secrete sweat from our sweat (sudiferous) glands.
This is a term that I was taught when I was training & it’s so widely used that even I have to try & correct myself all the time when referring to these visible open areas on the skin.
The correct term is ‘Follicles’ which is used to describe the exit on the skins surface that a hair protrudes from, but not all ‘Follicles’ have hairs growing out of them, they do, however, have sebaceous glands (oil glands) attached to them.

It goes without saying that I think it’s really important that we all know our correct skin type, especially if you are interested in caring for your skin correctly & therefore want to ensure you are using the right products so that you can treat/prevent skin issues/conditions.
Let me guide you in your skin type to ensure you can achieve skin health & skin radiance.

Marching forward to improved skin health...

It’s been a whirlwind of a couple of weeks & so now my feet have touched the Norwich ground again I want to share with you all my exciting news!

I was so humbled last week when I went to The Big C centre at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital to volunteer for the ‘Look good feel better’ charity. This wonderful cause gives some confidence boosting respite to women who are battling Cancer.

I, along with on this occasion 4 other volunteers from the beauty industry, assisted a group of 10 women in how to use a ‘goody bag’ packed with skincare & make up products donated by some of the key players in the cosmetic industry (including Bare Minerals that I use & recommend).

I felt so grateful of my skills & that I could use them in this way & was astounded at the transformation not just physically but psychologically of these women.
By the end of the session there was laughter & compliments to each other flying around the room with the feeling of being free for a couple of hours from the difficulties they were facing.

Next it was off to London to work with the lovely Lexis pr. I am an ambassador for Nair hair removal products & was asked to help them promote a new precision eyebrow & facial roller waxing product to the media.
As their ‘expert’ for 2 days I headed to IPC Media & Natmags in central London to shape brows & give my top tips for creating the perfect brow shape.
It was a buzzing couple of days & we were mobbed my beauty journalists from all the top women’s (& men’s) magazines.
I particularly liked the product as for home use its pretty fool proof & being based on ‘sugar wax’ was a gentler option for amateurs to use.
Watch this space for the roll out of press coverage over the coming weeks!

Then it was back to Norwich & my ‘skin lounge’ for a busy day of treating skin on Saturday before getting back on the train on Sunday in preparation for an ‘Advanced skin care Boot camp’, rather aptly, at The Imperial War Museum, on Monday.
The Science dimension to my signature ‘U and your skin’ facial is a really important one to me. It covers not only the fact that I have as advanced knowledge in the Anatomy & physiology of the skin, but that I am constantly researching the latest ingredient technology & innovations.
Jo Lewis, the cosmetic chemist that discovered a lot of the key skincare ingredients that we are familiar with today including AHA’s, has launched 3 of his own brands under his ‘Priori’ umbrella.
As he made MD Formulations, the range that I have used & recommended for 14 years, I was keen to go & find out more about them & how I could integrate this new, emerging skincare science into my treatments.
The day was delivered in a ‘Boot camp’ style with whistles being blown when it was time for a break & ‘Army style’ music playing at intervals to keep us on our skin science toes.
It was a long & full on day but after being able to ask the man himself some question via the beauty of Skype, I have come away motivated & ‘armed’ with more tools to get your skin in the tip top condition it deserves.
I will be telling you more very soon about the coming launch of these truly cutting edge products & as always can’t wait to share the clinical & medical evidence & trials that surround these products.
Until then….Left, right, left, right, left…

New free advice for Spring!

I really feel that despite the lack of Spring like weather here in the UK, that Spring has sprung as far as my business is concerned.

It's quite funny that the new aspects that I have been busy building behind the scenes for the last few months, have started to grow green shoots as we start to change seasons and merge into the Spring.

The first exciting development is that of my new website!
I am so very excited to see it live and would love to know your feedback. It's a work in progress as I am working to make it an interactive site that will keep you up to date with all the latest going's on in the 'U and your skin' camp.
There will be my growing 'In the news' section and my 'Video tutorial' tab that will allow you to learn directly from me some skin saving and caring tips. You can also link directly to this very blog!

It goes without saying that a HUGE Thank you needs to be said to my especially talented friend who has designed my gorgeous site...it's fair to say I have been cracking the whip.

What's on trend for 2011?

A part of my job that I really enjoy is working with the media.
I'm asked, fairly regularly, to give comments, opinions & tips related to my industry & contribute to articles on the 'hottest topics' in the land of skin & beauty.

So recently I was asked 'What are the trends for 2011?' 'What's happening with product development,client/customer behaviour & the spending habits of the public when it comes to caring for their skin?'.

Here I share with you my guide to the 'Beauty trends for 2011!'

• Products are going to continue to blind us with science with ingredients that claim to brighten, defend, repair, strengthen & plump our skin,on the increase.
Bright, even toned skin also sets the bar for a younger looking skin.
Foundations will give flawless finishes in skin identical shades using more natural ingredients.

• I am seeing a move towards client’s wanting ‘Power facial’s’ instead of opting for the quick fix of Botox. Great news for me as a skin therapist & also as there is a real buzz surrounding treating the skin from within.
I have been following this philosophy with my client’s for the last 10 years. (If you haven't already booked your place on my 'Healthy Ageing' workshop,March 26th,with Nutritional Therapist Glen Matten there is still time.)

• Customer spending will move towards utilising the 'high-tech beauty gadgets' that are available to remove hair, power cleanse or firm the skin at home.
Real value for money is being seen in skin treatments now & the habit of spending hundreds a month on quick fix fillers is fading as clients’ seek out long term skin health.

So to get ahead when it come to improving your skin book my signature 'U and your skin' facial...you can be sure to be right on trend for 2011.

There's so much more to 'You are what you eat'. It's an age old story...

About 11 years ago I must admit, I was a mess!
My Acne prone skin was at it's worst, I was over weight, unfit and relied on a barrage of processed foods to get me through my busy days as an area account manager for MD Formulations skincare.

How could I, as a skin therapist, an expert in my field be preaching about achieving healthy, glowing skin & not be doing everything in my power to portray this myself!
Something had to change. That change led me to becoming even more educated as a facialist and to the development of my signature 'U and your skin' facial.

I changed my lifestyle, adopted a new approach to eating, part of which, for me, deleted wheat & dairy from my diet & I was amazed at the impact it had on my skin's health.
The Acne lesion's started to slow, my skin was healing more efficiently and I got that 'glow' back to my sallow chops.

I now understood that my skin was a mirror, a reflection of my internal health and armed with my products I began to develop and experiment with different combinations of nutrients and skin treatments to heal my skin.

I find it so exciting to see how this concept, that I've been working with for the last 10 years, is becoming a 'Hot topic'.
Nutriceuticals, products that target skin health from within, are big news right now and it's always been part of my work as a skin therapist, one of the 3 dimensional approaches I take to treating the skin.

Three years ago I realised that for me to really take my client's skin to the next level, I needed more knowledge and for this I began a collaboration with the font of all nutritional knowledge, Glen Matten www.glenmatten.com
Glen and I both approach our work with a strong evidence based, scientific background and so it makes complete sense for him to tackle my client's skin health from within and for me to then topically target skin issues.

We want to educate you all and bust a lot of the mis-guided myths that surround this topic and are very pleased to be planning a workshop based around 'Healthy Ageing'.
It will be a 3 hours of cutting edge, evidence based information to feed you with the tools you need to look 'younger for longer'.
This exclusive event will be held in Norwich to start with a view to running it out in London and beyond!

We are going beyond what a 'Skin, hair and nail' supplement can give you and there will be plenty of opportunity to fire your questions at us.
So watch this space! and in the meantime eat your greens, berries, fish, nuts....
